Kongo in Haiti: Honoring Petwo Heritage
This lecture will present historical data from the records of the Trans-Atlantic Trade showing that the majority of people in early Haiti came from the Kongo. Their culture played a decisive role in shaping the traditions of Haiti. Kongo cosmology is fundamental to dances, songs, writings, and to other ceremonial aspects of Haitian Vodou. Cultural elements from the Kongo have come to be known in Haiti as Petwo, The king who tried to re-unify the Kongo after the collapse of the Kingdom following the Battle of Bwila with the Portuguese. Zinga, Laren Kongo, is among other historical figures well known throughout Haiti. Archeological findings of Kongo influence in the US will also be presented. In short, the lecture will be a tribute to our ancestors of the Kongo/Petwo heritage.
